Miami University held its Fall Commencement ceremony on Dec. 13 at Millett Hall. Nearly 1,100 degree candidates were recognized during the ceremony.
Degrees conferred included 734 bachelor degrees, 276 master's degrees, 37 associate degrees, 32 certificates, and 20 doctorate degrees. The most bachelor degree candidates came from Finance (41), followed by Marketing (36), Psychology (39), and Biology (23).
Four individuals received Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degrees during the ceremony: Sharon Janosik Mitchell ’73, Graham Mitchell ’73, M.En. ’76, Richard Cocks, and Richard Smucker ’70.
Chris Makaroff, special assistant to the provost and former dean of the College of Arts and Science, served as this year's Fall Commencement speaker. Makaroff was a co-recipient of this year’s Benjamin Harrison Medallion. The medallion is awarded annually for extraordinary and sustained contributions related to teaching, research, and service. Makaroff excelled as an educator and administrator throughout a 35-year career at Miami that saw him mentor hundreds of students while also securing significant funding for the university.
There were 34 states, plus Washington, D.C., represented among degree candidates, with the most hailing from Ohio (645). For those earning bachelor degrees, 13% are graduating with Cum Laude honors, 8% Magna Cum Laude, and nearly 7% Summa Cum Laude.
